What is therapy like?

Generally in session, you can expect to experience mindfulness, increased self awareness, and practical solution-focused discussion – with a touch of humor. Jaclyn can help you to find meaning even during the most challenging times. You will find conversation is comfortable and easy.

(Very) Frequently Asked Therapy Questions

A safe, comfortable place to talk about your feelings, with someone who truly hears you, cares, and understands, is basically for everyone. I admit, I’m a little biased but if you’ve made it to this page, it’s safe to say you’re interested enough to give it a try.

How do I know therapy is right for me?

What if I feel awkward?

2

Then I will feel awkward and we will both be awkward together. NO! Just kidding. I have years of experience in assessment, teaching, and awkward slow starts. Hey, no judgment here! I will lead the way to help get session going and am confident that you will feel comfortable in no time.

That’s not really a question, but I hear this A LOT. Talking about our feelings is part of being a healthy and well functioning grown human. If you’re not an overly emotional and sensitive person, that’s okay. Therapy will not change you into one. The goal is having the skills to effectively communicate how you feel when it’s necessary.

I don’t like talking about my feelings.

What if I’ve been to therapy before and it didn’t really help?

4

That’s okay. Sometimes therapy isn’t the right fit. It’s not necessarily because therapy “doesn’t work,” but sometimes the therapist, timing, approach, or relationship just wasn’t right for you.

If you’ve done therapy before, I want to know what you liked, what you didn’t, what felt helpful, and what made you think, yeah, I’m not doing that again. That way we can figure out what might work better this time.

Jaclyn Matthews, licensed mental health counselor, LMHC. Offering virtual therapy through Modern Mental Health.

Hi, I’m Jac.

Outside of therapy, I’m a pretty normal person with a lot of interests and an almost endless supply of things I want to learn about, try, or go see. I’m a mom, I homeschool my son, I love to travel, and I’m almost always planning our next adventure—or at least thinking about one. I’m naturally curious and can get very invested in a random question that suddenly feels extremely important to understand. I also love the bigger questions about people, life, meaning, why we’re here, and why humans are the way we are. Apparently I really never stop being a therapist entirely.

I’m also someone who laughs a lot and doesn’t think everything meaningful has to be serious. I change my mind. I overthink things. I know the healthy coping skill and sometimes don’t particularly feel like using it. I’m figuring out life as I go, too. I think that’s part of what keeps me grounded in this work. I’m not sitting on the other side of the screen as someone who has mastered being a person. I just happen to know a lot about people, really enjoy them, and feel pretty lucky that I get to spend my days helping them figure themselves out.

Just Start.

We can figure out the rest when you get here.
